A brief history...

In the 1820s in England, football was played widely. There were very few rules and it consisted of two mobs chasing some kind of ball around fields and urban open spaces. It was a man’s game and the players were largely uncontrolled and did a lot of damage.

One school, Rugby, played the game using a pig’s bladder inside a leather cover as a ball. Here’s where the myth of William Webb Ellis took root. He was the boy who ‘picked up the ball and ran’ (very much against the rules).

Webb Ellis is today regarded as the founder of modern rugby. And the home of Leeds amateur rugby union is Roundhegians.
