History of Roundhegians Rugby Union Club, Leeds

We have been at The Memorial Ground since 1953, when volunteers built a clubhouse and turned a derelict piece of land into playing fields to honour the 88 former pupils from Roundhay School who gave their lives on active service during the Second World War. Many of the trees planted at that time – one for each life lost – have survived to create a particularly attractive setting.

Established in 1928, The Roundhegians Rugby Football Club became totally open early in the 1970s. The club is active in promoting Rugby in local schools at both primary and high school age and now has a thriving youth membership of over 200 players from ages 7 to 17, together with a stable Colts squad. We registered as a Community Amateur Sports Club in 2005.

The Roundhegians Sports Association has evolved gradually, starting with the foundation of the Badminton Club in 1980. This currently has over a hundred senior players and more than fifty junior players. The Football Club emerged in 1992. For many years Golf has been a common interest among members of the various sporting clubs and has also become something of a magnet for other sports-minded people with no affiliation to the core sports. For several years now we have been the home of Moortown Shotokan Karate Club.
